Abstract

The article's theme is the power of religion in shaping a political mindset. The main objective is to describe the various contingencies that led the first residents of the Lindeia neighborhood in Belo Horizonte to adopt this mindset. The specific objectives are two. One is to understand the importance of this for the local struggles (in the sense of demands) for infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood, which took place in the 1970s and 1980s. The other is to realize to what extent this type of mentality still persists. Theoretically, the references are from excerpts from works in the social and human sciences, with an emphasis on anthropology. The study focuses on the testimonies of the neighborhood's precursors, presented using the oral history method. The article's main conclusive result is its own production, or the realization that it is possible to extract new interpretations from an excerpt linked to a thesis.
