HOW MANY AMAZONS FIT INTO COP-30?
PERSPECTIVES ON THE CLIMATE IN DISPUTE IN BRAZIL
Keywords:
COP-30, Brazilian Amazon, Climate change, Conflicts, BelémAbstract
This article centers its analysis on the triad of Amazons, COP-30, and climate change, offering an overview of a debate that often appears fragmented. The aim is to highlight the tensions that, across different territorial scales, have gained visibility since Belém, Pará, was announced as the host city for COP-30. Adopting an analytical and reflective approach, the discussion is based on a broad empirical foundation, encompassing academic, journalistic, and institutional publications, as well as fieldwork. Five main sensitive topics are identified: (1) the transformation of Belém’s urban infrastructure; (2) oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River; (3) the expansion of agriculture, livestock and mining frontiers; (4) the carbon credit market; and (5) the participation of Indigenous peoples and traditional communities in debates and decision-making processes. It is argued that COP-30 highlights and updates conflicts, revealing disputes over the meanings attributed to the Amazons.
